With bright white walls and majestic dome is black, 130-year-old grand mosque was a beautiful building. This is where hundreds of people
displaced from the tsunami disaster in 2004 that nearly leveled the entire city. At that time the devastating tsunami, meluluhlantahkan every building, whether old or new. This is a fact that gives greater meaning to the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh. This mosque is more than just a masterpiece of Islamic architecture in Indonesia, because it can survive the tsunami disaster which is seen by many as the direct intervention of the Creator.
Book of the kingdom said that the mosque was first built of wood on tahun1621 under the leadership of Sultan Iskandar Muda. Some people say the mosque was built even earlier in 1292 by Sultan Alaidin Mahmudsyah. During the war in Aceh in 1873, the mosque was destroyed. Recognizing the value and importance to the people of Aceh, in 1879, Major General Vander which served as the General Military at the time, to rebuild the mosque as promised by the Governor-General Van Lansberge 1877. Two dome added again by the Dutch in 1936 and two other dome added by the Indonesian government in 1957.
Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is located in downtown Banda Aceh. Marked by a tower as high as 35 m, 7 large and 7 domes minarets, Baiturrahman likely become a model for other mosques in Indonesia and Peninsular Malaysia; replacing mosques with multi-layered roof style.
